TV-3 launches course on Russian literature for the hearing impaired: Krylov’s fables and short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Saltykov-Shchedrin in sign language

TV-3 channel, part of Gazprom-Media Holding, has presented its social educational project “Zvuchi!” (Be Heard!) - a series of video clips in which Russian literature works are told not only through voice, but also sign language.

Professional hearing impaired actors translated the works into sign language. Thanks to “Zvuchi!” people with hearing impairments will be able to better understand their native language and the nuances in the word meanings. This will help them learn to speak eloquently and also to appreciate the beauty and depth of the works in a new way since reading a poem and “hearing” it recited in sign language are two completely different emotions.

The “Zvuchi!” project was born thanks to Maria Rumyantseva from Yaroslavl, who lost her hearing at the age of three. With time, Maria not only learned to speak well and to use sign language, but also found the drive to help other people with hearing impairments. She took part in the TV-3 show Million na Mechtu (A Million for a Dream) in December 2020 and shared her biggest dream with the show’s jury and viewers - to create a video book in sign language.
